Hidden fees, misleading advertising, and pressure tactics continue to harm New Jersey car buyers. The New Jersey Auto Owners Association is stepping up its efforts against deceptive practices by auto dealers, including hidden fees, misleading advertising, and high-pressure sales tactics that take advantage of consumers.
Through its Investigations Division, the organization has received complaints about dealers adding undisclosed fees at the last minute, advertising vehicles at prices that are not actually available, failing to honor advertised warranties or promotions, and using aggressive sales techniques that rush buyers into poor decisions.
“Car buying is already stressful enough for most people,” the New Jersey Auto Owners Association said. “Dealers should not be allowed to make it worse through deception and manipulation. Consumers have a right to clear, honest information.”
The organization is calling for:
– Stronger enforcement of advertising and sales practice regulations – Clear rules requiring all fees to be disclosed upfront in writing – Penalties for dealers who advertise vehicles or terms they do not intend to honor – Better consumer education about common dealer tactics – Faster investigation and resolution of complaints against licensed dealers
The New Jersey Auto Owners Association plans to work with the Division of Consumer Affairs and the Attorney General’s Office to increase accountability for dealers who repeatedly violate consumer protection laws.
